Twenty years on the projects that matter

I've spent two decades delivering some of the UK's most complex and demanding projects - the O2, the British Museum, Victoria Palace Theatre. Heritage and contemporary. External envelope and architectural finish. New-build and sensitive restoration.

That experience covers both ends of the spectrum: the technical rigour of heritage conservation work, where every decision is scrutinised against the original fabric of a building, and the precision of modern architectural finish, where the quality of the detail is the entire point.

The gap nobody was filling

The level of project understanding that goes into a national landmark should be available to the architect designing a £300k residential extension, or the client doing the most significant financial commitment of their life. It rarely is.

Most contractors at this project size are competent tradespeople. They build what they're told to build. What they rarely do is read a drawing and understand the intention behind it - the architectural logic, the material rationale, the decisions that a good contractor protects and a poor one inadvertently destroys.

BLK SHP exists to fill that gap. A small practice - five projects a year - where every commission gets the same depth of attention that used to go into projects ten times the size.

Design-led from the first conversation

We work directly with architects as a trusted delivery partner, and directly with private clients who need both design thinking and build delivery in one relationship. Either way, you get the same thing: a contractor who understands the intent, protects it through every stage, and hands over a finished project that looks like the drawing.

We read drawings properly. We understand the architectural logic behind every decision and we protect it through the build - even when it would be easier not to.

We limit ourselves to five major projects a year deliberately. Not because we can't take on more - because we won't compromise the level of attention each project deserves.

No shortcuts. Ever.

The shortcut that saves two days on programme costs two years of reputation. We don't take them. The finish you see on handover day is the one in the drawing.

Honest from the start

If a project isn't the right fit, we say so. If a budget is tight for what the brief demands, we say that too. Better to be honest at the start than disappointing at the end.

The person you meet in the first conversation is the person on site. No handoffs, no account managers, no surprises. Direct relationship from first meeting to handover.
